2016 World AIDS Day Statement
As a proven method to prevent the transmission of HIV and other STDs, condoms are an indispensable tool for sex workers to protect themselves at work. And yet, in 2016 the police repeatedly seized condoms during raids on local massage parlors and used them as evidence of “keeping a vice establishment”. This unreasonable practice has put sex workers in constant fear and anxiety, forcing them to clear their workplace of all safe sex resources and work under “condomless”, high-risk conditions.
Justice for Hande Kader
Hande Kader, a prominent Turkish transgender activist and sex worker, was raped and burned to death on August 8, 2016. The brutal murder caused international outcry and prompted calls for change in a country that remained deeply conservative on LGBTI issues.
On August 23, Midnight Blue joined local LGBT group Rainbow of Hong Kong and others in a protest at the Turkish Consulate, calling on the Turkish government to take immediate action to protect sexual minorities in the community from danger and fear.
